President Donald Trump faced ridicule on social media for backtracking on the 145 percent tariffs imposed on Chinese imports, which many critics claim have harmed the global economy. Trump added that the current tariff rate would not remain as high as 145 percent: "145 percent is very high, and it won’t be that high.. Earlier this month, China increased tariffs on U.S. goods from 84 percent to 125 percent, with the Chinese Finance Ministry describing U.S. tariff actions as a violation of international economic rules and stating that they would not respond to future hikes. White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt announced that over 100 countries have reached out to the U.S. for trade talks since Trump proposed universal tariffs, with 18 submitting proposals; however, China is not among them.
