Alana "Honey Boo Boo" Thompson is all grown up and getting real about life after reality TV. Now a college nursing student, the 19-year-old opens up about the breaking point in her relationship with her mother, Mama June, and the lasting impact of early fame.
Alana shares how she’s working to overcome the challenges of child stardom, including the emotional toll of growing up on camera, and not receiving any of the money earned from ‘Toddlers & Tiaras’ or ‘Here Comes Honey Boo Boo’. She reflects on watching her mom’s 300-lb. weight loss journey and the pressure it created for her own body image: “Am I going to have to do that one day?”
She discusses how her mother “changed” during the height of their fame, and how being filmed altered their family life. Although Mama June is now sober, their relationship remains complicated. Still, Alana says the heartbreaking loss of her sister Anna “Chickadee” Thompson to cancer helped bring the family closer and ease long-standing tensions.
Alana opens up about finding happiness in her personal life, including her relationship with boyfriend Dralin. Despite the hardships, she’s proud of her resilience: “I love that I’ve persevered.” Now focused on building a life on her own terms, Alana is rewriting her story—one chapter at a time. Thompson’s biopic ‘I Was Honey Boo Boo’ premieres May 17 on Lifetime and ‘Mama June: Family Crisis’ returns May 30 on WE tv.
